Decorating Inside And Out: The Fall Edit Vol 5

Writer's picture: Chelsea Allen NicholsChelsea Allen Nichols

It's that time of year again! Every time I say goodbye to Gary when he leaves for work and he walks down the path to the car, I hear that fall sound of leaves crunching under his feet. Is there any other sound that makes one think of fall as much as this? Maybe the sound of geese flying overhead, or the crispy, cracking, crunch of an apple being bitten into.

Here is a peek into my autumn style book of decorations. I hope you find some inspiration that's outside of the box.

Find

Crab apples are ripe and beautiful at this time of year. String these crimson beauties onto a thread with a needle and hang them up. Note: I don't think I'd recommend having these right up against a wall before they are dry as the colour may transfer.

Make

Canned goods! No, I'm not kidding. There is so much bounty in fall waiting to be canned, and a row or two of canned goods on a shelf can be very attractive and fallish, not to mention yummy. For an added dash of colour, cut out circles of fabric (you can even use old dish towels, or retired clothing for the fabric) that are a few inches bigger than your jar lid. You can draw a circle on the back of the fabric with a pen while using the jar ring from your jar for reference. Place the fabric over the snap lid and screw down the ring. Trim the edges of the fabric as needed. You can also make tags and attach them to your jars with thread or string. Line up your beautiful jars on a shelf and admire your handiwork.

Buy

Check your local dollar store. True, lots of items at the dollar store are just exactly what they seem: cheap, low-quality items. However, if you are willing to take a quick peek, now and then, there are treasures that are well made and very affordable. But you have to be on the ball because when other people find the same little treasures, and they are soon sold out, usually never to appear again.

Another good place to look for nice but affordable décor is a place like Winners, Marshals, etc. They almost always have items at the ends of their full-price shelves that are on sale.

Autumn Journal: My Personal Décor For This Fall

Here we have a fairly simple setup using plants as accent pieces. The stool and tray are both gifts from Gary's grandpa, the lamp was a gift from my sister, while the cotton I picked in a field in Florida. The green milk bottle came from an antique store, the *beads from a Hobby Lobby, and the *mushroom is for sale on my website.

Approximate cost: $15.00

This is a Weck brand *fermentation jar that someone gave Gary as a gift. When he noticed it in my décor a few years ago he said something along the lines of, oh, that's where that went! The *pinecones were gathered by myself, the *spools of thread salvaged from my friend's old stuff she was throwing out, and the cute clay *mushroom is a dollar store find.

Approximate cost: $3.00

I adore this shelf Gary built for me. It combines two things that make up something I really like: functionality, and beauty together. I like that I can use it but also that I can make it pretty. If we want to talk about favourites or least favourites, one of the things I have disliked very much since childhood are things that are functional and ugly. Why does the shoe company I am trying to buy comfortable shoes from assume that just because I want to be comfortable, I am therefore a boring person with a taste for shoes that is bland as cardboard and of course I would be overjoyed to wear those nasty beige shoes with the velcro straps. I still haven't figured it out... I think that's why I like old tools so much, typically, they are made to last, work well, and are beautiful.

So, first photo: the drinking tower was a gift as was the *red Dutch oven and some of the cookbooks (A Piece Of Cake comes from my mom's collection and is very special to me). The rest of the *cookbooks came predominantly from the sale rack or the second-hand store while the huge *orange Dutch oven came from (drumroll please) the garbage. May I now add that it is a Le Creuset and that new, these cost around a thousand dollars. It was a happy day for me when I spied that pot by the curb. This is your lesson to not underestimate taking a peek at that pile of junk on the sidewalk. You never know what you'll find. The glass pumpkin soup tureen was a purchase of mine, as were the *gold spoons and the *mug that they sit in.

In the bottom photo, the *light blue Dutch oven and the *mini cast iron frying pans were gifts. The *black baking dish is something I bought years ago at the bookstore of all places (they had a gorgeous collection of stoneware that fall and I bought several unique pieces from it), the *enamel cast iron baking pan was a sale item I found at our corner grocery store when we lived in Montreal for a couple of months, and the *cast iron Dutch oven was a thrift store find that I purchased before I really knew anything about cast iron. Later I came to realize I had obtained a Griswold in mint condition for under twenty dollars.

Approximate cost: $125.00

For this last bit of decorating, I bought most of these items. The *cash register is an old metal antique toy that I found at a thrift store in Illinois. In some ways, it's not quite what I would usually pick for decorating my house and I thought about it for a little while before finally deciding to buy it. In the end, it was only eight dollars so I think it was worth the money. The robin eggshells are ones that I found and the quail eggshells are some that we bought from the grocery store. The *bottle, grasses, *feathers, *mushroom, *cup, and also the *macramé wall-hanging of which you only see in part are all purchases I have made over time. The metal edge ruler is an old one that was given to me and the beautiful *book of poems was a gift from a friend.

Approximate cost: $70.00

Here's to a beautiful fall! Now go drink your apple cider or PSL or what ever you call all that pumpkin spice stuff.
